who are we?
We are a diverse group of ecologists based at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, and affiliated with the Centre for African Ecology.
Our research is progressive in its integration of modelling, field ecology, eddy-covariance data, and remote-sensing technology to better understand dynamics and management of savanna ecosystems. We are particularly interested in feedbacks between vegetation and environmental processes, and how evolutionary history influences these patterns. This research helps to ensure that southern African systems are correctly represented in global models, and has implications for the management of savanna parks and rangelands. We have a range of collaborators within Africa and beyond and aim to do high-profile science, train excellent African researchers, and ensure that global theory and environmental policy are better informed about our ecosystems, their unique dynamics and management problems.
